Man found dead in Columbia River near Government Island identified

MULTNOMAH COUNTY Ore. (KPTV) – The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the man who fell from a boat and drowned July 31 in the Columbia River.

The body of 53-year-old Warren Hoard was found July 31 near Broughton Beach, the release said Monday. The MCSO River Patrol was dispatched to recover it.

Hoard reportedly fell off the boat, dove into the water, and failed to resurface near Government Island. Several agencies attempted to assist in the rescue effort but were unable to find him, including a dive team, a U.S. Coast Guard boat, and a helicopter on July 27.

A 72-year-old man died in a wakeboarding accident Sunday morning on the Columbia River near the western tip of Government Island.

After an hour-long, unsuccessful search, it was determined that the man had drowned and a rescue operation was launched.

Attempts to recover Hoard’s body were also unsuccessful; very strong currents were noted at the river bottom, suggesting that Hoard’s body had been carried downstream.

Witnesses say Hoard was intoxicated and not wearing a life jacket when he drowned.
