How the app’s new partnership with Whole Foods aims to combat food waste

RICHMOND, Va. — With the recent expansion of its app to Richmond-based Whole Foods, customers now have another way to save on food.

Food app Too Good To Go lets customers buy unused food for just a third of the normal price.

Local businesses and restaurants can put out food products—from baked goods to prepared meals—that would otherwise go to waste. It’s a global problem the company wants to reduce as much as possible.

“Our end product, what we want consumers to do, what we want companies to do, is feel like they can be a part of the fight against food waste,” said Sarah Soteroff, director of press relations for Too Good To Go North America.

The app’s recent partnership with Whole Foods is a huge step forward in fulfilling its long-term mission.

Large retailers are important for the app’s purposes because they can offer more products per day, but the app also works with local businesses regardless of the amount of products they can offer.

“If, for example, you run Sarah’s Bakery and you only have a few bags of surplus food a week, that’s totally fine,” Soteroff said. “You probably still don’t want that food to go to waste, and you’re putting in the time, effort and resources to make it.”

The Danish app recently began a large-scale expansion across the entire east coast and is looking for partners wherever it can.

“We’re basically entering a state where we’re saying to all food businesses, ‘We’re open, we’re looking to partner with you,’” Soteroff said.

With the addition of Whole Foods, the app has partnered with more than a dozen Richmond-based companies.

If you are a local business owner and would like to partner with Too Good To Go, you can register as a business on their website.

Customers can find products near them by downloading the app to their mobile devices, available in both the Apple Play and Google Play stores.
