Tata Power mulling new thermal projects, says CEO Sinha – Industry News

Tata Power will consider new thermal projects depending on the opportunities and profits they offer, Praveer Sinha told media persons on Tuesday.

Tata Power has so far maintained that it will not undertake new thermal projects as it focuses on renewable energy — aiming for it to account for two-thirds of its capacity by 2030. “The situation is evolving. We will study it whenever the opportunity arises (for new thermal projects),” he said, adding that the company will study it from an energy security perspective.

The Budget has proposed to set up new thermal units in the country to augment energy supply. The Economic Survey 2023-24 has stated that India will pursue a diversified mix of energy security sources, with thermal power, including coal, playing a significant role to provide base load, minimising system risks, while pursuing low-emission pathways in line with national commitments.

Sinha also said the company is working on the technical side of building nuclear power plants. “We will look at adding clean energy to our portfolio,” he said.

In the budget, the finance minister said the public sector will work with private partners to develop small modular reactors in the form of Bharat Small Reactors. “There is a huge demand for energy. There is a good opportunity to increase generation capacity and T&D systems,” Sinha said.
