Seattle Mariners show noticeable growth after disappointing series win

The Seattle Mariners’ series loss to the Los Angeles Angels from July 22 to 24 was one of the most memorable of the season for many reasons β€” most of them negative.

It was the first time this season that the Mariners had been swept, prompting an impassioned postgame interview from manager Scott Servais, and Seattle fans were perhaps the most despondent they had been at the team this season β€” as evidenced by the boos at T-Mobile Park after every game.

This series could prove to be a turning point of the season for the Mariners.

Since Seattle lost three games to Los Angeles, the Mariners have swept the Chicago White Sox, lost two of three in a close series with the Boston Red Sox and just won two of three against one of the Philadelphia Phillies, one of the best teams in the National League. They are 6-3 since July 24.

During that span β€” Seattle regained sole possession of the American League West lead by defeating the Houston Astros (1.5 games) and bolstered its offense with the signings of Randy Arozarena and Justin Turner.

Servais mentioned that the signings of these two players have added some energy to the squad and it is starting to show.

According to Statmuse data, since July 24, the Mariners have a .244 average, 17 home runs and 52 RBIs, and are striking out fewer (85 times during that span).

Second baseman Jorge Polanco has a .300 average with four home runs and nine RBIs since then. Cal Raleigh has a .257 average with three home runs and five RBIs, and Luke Raley has five RBIs and a home run. Raley’s home run was a three-RBI, 459-foot blast that gave him the second-longest home run in franchise history.

As for the new additions, Arozarena has a .290 average with one home run, two RBIs and nine runs scored, while Turner has a .278 average with one home run, six RBIs and two runs scored.

Seattle has looked like a completely new offense since losing to the Angels. The Mariners will play six more home games during homestands with the Detroit Tigers and New York Mets. If they keep up the pace they’re playing, Seattle will only extend its lead in the AL West.

The Mariners will play the first of a three-game series with the Tigers on Tuesday at 6:40 p.m. PT.
