Sky confirms ‘major’ change and your TV will be affected next month

One of the great things about any new Sky deal is that it usually includes full access to Netflix. This means you only pay one bill for Sky channels mixed with a range of box sets, films and series from the streaming giant. It’s a nice perk, but that’s about to change and could annoy some users who like to watch without the distraction of adverts.

Netflix recently confirmed a huge overhaul of its popular streaming plans, with its most basic ‘Standard’ offering now including sponsored news before content begins playing. Until now, those with traditional Sky contracts have been able to access Netflix without the annoyance of adverts, but that’s all set to change.

“We wanted to let you know that Netflix has withdrawn its Netflix Basic plan. As a result, the Netflix plan included with your Sky subscription will automatically change to Netflix Standard with Ads,” Sky confirmed in a message posted online.

While this may sound a bit annoying, this option also has some additional benefits, including the ability to watch on more devices at the same time and HD quality.

Sky also says that “adverts will appear during natural breaks in the story to ensure a smooth viewing experience, and no adverts will appear on children’s profiles.”

These changes will affect all customers. It has been confirmed that the changes will automatically go into effect in September, so you will be able to enjoy ad-free access soon.

If you’ve recently signed up for a Sky subscription, you’ll already be on Netflix Standard with adverts, so nothing will change.

In short, Netflix now offers three options.

A standard ad-supported subscription usually costs £4.99 and lets you watch videos with adverts added to keep costs down.

Those who want a more streamlined experience can upgrade to Standard (£10.99), which gets rid of that sponsored messaging. Like the ad-supported Standard, Standard also offers Full HD content, along with dual-screen viewing.

Finally, we have Premium (£17.99). This ups the quality to 4K UHD, removes ads, and offers the ability to watch on 4 devices at once.
