Tesla recalls over 1.6 million cars in China for remote software repairs

BEIJING (AP) — Tesla is recalling 1.68 million cars in China for a remote software update that will ensure the cars warn drivers when the trunk is not closed, China’s market regulator said.

The late Tuesday evening announcement also said vehicles with faulty trunk latches would be repaired free of charge. The recalls apply to certain imported Model S and X models and domestic Model 3 and Y models manufactured between Oct. 15, 2020, and July 17, 2024.

The recall notice said an unlocked trunk lid could open while driving, obstructing the driver’s view. It did not say whether this has ever happened to Tesla cars. The U.S. electric vehicle maker will fix the problem with a remote software update, the State Administration for Market Regulation said.

China is a major market and manufacturing base for Tesla, and a source of growing competition from Chinese electric vehicle makers. The company reported sharp decline in net income in the second quarter last month when sales fell despite price cuts and low financing rates.
