Lyles Wins Bronze (and Tests Positive for COVID-19)

Noah Lyles looked nothing like himself at the Paris Olympics on Thursday night — and not just because he didn’t win the 200 meters, his signature event. Lyles, who has a history of asthma, ran the race despite testing positive for COVID-19, and after the race, he received medical attention and collapsed in a wheelchair. Lyles had been hoping to become the first American in 40 years to achieve a rare “double sprint” after winning the 100 meters on Sunday. 👉 What we know so far.

Racing medals: Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo won gold in 19.46 seconds, while American sprinter Kenny Bednarek took silver in 19.62 seconds. Lyles took bronze in 19.70 seconds. 🏅 See how it all turned out.

Checking the calendar: Trump recently suggested he might back out of a deal he made for a Sept. 10 debate on ABC with President Joe Biden, who has since dropped out of the race. ABC News reported Thursday that both Trump and Harris have confirmed they will participate in the debate. The Trump campaign also proposed debate dates of Sept. 4 and Sept. 25, but Harris’ camp has not yet responded to that offer for a multi-debate. 🎤 Here’s what we know so far.

Looking towards renewal

It was the deadliest fire in U.S. history. A year ago, fires ravaged historic Lahaina, Hawaii, killing more than 100 people and destroying homes, cultural sites, and businesses. The fire caused a colossal loss to Hawaii, Hawaiian families, and the world. It devastated people and a way of life that was already under threat, and it drew international attention to the island’s struggles. A year later, signs of renewal are emerging from the rubble, signs of the rebirth of Old Hawaii. But for some, those memories are hard to forget. ✍️ Read on: A Lahaina grandmother recalls a terrifying night spent in the heart of a fire.
