• ChargePoint has introduced a new Omni Port that features CCS and NACS connectors.
  • The appropriate connector for your car will be automatically released when using the company’s app.
  • Charging stations equipped with the new technology will automatically refill the NACS adapter as needed.

The auto industry has adopted the North American Charging Standard (NACS), which means electric vehicles will slowly transition away from the Combined Charging System (CCS) standard. It won’t happen overnight and likely won’t be painless.

Since some people are clueless about their cars, ChargePoint is trying to make charging reliable by introducing the new Omni Port technology. It has CCS and NACS connectors, but that doesn’t make it special.

Quite the opposite, because the station will automatically release the correct connector for your vehicle. This should prevent unwitting Karens from trying to force the NACS connector into the CCS port while demanding to speak to a supervisor.

In order for the station to unlock the appropriate connector, owners must enter their vehicle’s make and model into the ChargePoint app, then tap the charging icon. If drivers don’t have the app, they can use the station’s touchscreen to select the connector they need.

While that may sound like an exaggeration, the demo video is interesting because it shows that both charging cables offer both CCS and NACS connectors. The CCS connector appears to be native, while the NACS adapter appears to be automatically applied by the dock when needed. It’s a neat trick that eliminates the need for a proprietary adapter.

ChargePoint noted that more than half of the 5.5 million electric vehicles in North America have J1772 or CCS1 charging ports and will need access to the connectors for years to come, well after the industry fully implements NACS in every new vehicle.
