Ørsted partnership to develop 1 GW of battery storage in the US Midwest region

Danish energy company Ørsted has partnered with Mission Clean Energy to develop four 1 GW standalone energy storage systems located in the Midwest region of the United States.

The collaboration marks Ørsted’s entry into the independent battery storage market in the US and globally, expanding its renewable energy portfolio.

The Danish energy company will invest its capital to secure and maintain priority positions in the interconnection queue for its storage projects. Meanwhile, Mission Clean Energy will maintain its leading role in driving the development of these initiatives.

Both companies have submitted applications to connect to projects in the Central and Northern regions of the Mid-Continent Independent System Operator (MISO).

Mission Clean Energy CEO Max Bakker said: “The partnership with Ørsted is an important milestone for Mission Clean Energy.

“Ørsted is an ideal partner to complement our development capabilities with the strength of their balance sheet and sponsorship support. Our combined experience and resources will accelerate these projects and deliver effective clean energy solutions to the MISO region.”

Ørsted noted that the agreement provides access to assets, which contributes to the company’s growth.

The company’s strategic goal is to expand energy storage capabilities alongside wind and solar energy in order to offer customers integrated solutions.

Ørsted added that the partnership complements the company’s existing development activities, while also broadening and diversifying the technology portfolio it can offer utilities and other customers.

The Danish energy company also has the option to acquire ownership shares in the projects as they mature.

Ørsted’s commitment to expanding storage capacity extends beyond the Midwest as the company explores opportunities across the country.

The partnership builds on Ørsted’s existing portfolio: a 40 MW energy storage project at the Permian Solar Center in West Texas and a 300 MW/1,200 megawatt-hour energy storage project at the Eleven Mile Solar Center in Arizona.

Ørsted Chief Commercial Officer James Giamarino said: “We look forward to working with Mission Clean Energy on this unique partnership to accelerate the expansion of storage projects across the Midwest and to broaden our portfolio of renewable energy technologies and services to customers.

“Continued investment in and evolution of storage solutions is critical to ensuring a resilient and reliable network, and this partnership with Mission helps us achieve this important goal.”

In May 2024, Ørsted partnered with ABL, a consulting firm specializing in energy and marine services, to provide warranty services for the marine transportation and installation of wind turbines and cables at the 920 MW Greater Changhua 2b and 4 wind farms in Taiwan.
