Costco announces a big change to its check-in policy. Here’s what’s now required to get in.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Costco is taking aggressive steps to combat the misuse of membership cards and announced it will install scanning devices at the entrances of many of its warehouse stores.

“In the coming months, membership scanning devices will be used at the front doors of your local warehouse,” the company wrote in a statement on its website. “Once implemented, all members must scan their physical or digital membership card by tapping the barcode or QR code on the scanner before entering. Guests must also be accompanied by a valid member to enter.”

According to reports in several publications, the change began earlier this year and now appears to be rolling out nationwide. In California, the new membership scanners have already been spotted at Costco locations in Huntington Beach and Inglewood.

At the time of publication, there was no information about the Staten Island store relocation.

“If your membership is inactive, has expired, or you would like to sign up for a new membership, an associate will ask you to stop by the Member Service Desk before entering the warehouse to make your purchase,” Costco also noted in a statement. “In addition, if your membership card does not have a photo, please be prepared to show a valid photo ID. We encourage you to stop by the Member Service Desk to have your photo taken, which will be placed on your card.”
