TikTok and Pinterest Team Up with Amazon to Enable In-App Purchases

Amazon has reportedly struck new deals that will allow people to shop without having to leave TikTok or Pinterest. Information. Users will be able to buy items from Amazon ads that pop up on both platforms. Typically, clicking the ad would take the shopper to the Amazon interface, but this offer will let them make the purchase from TikTok or Pinterest using the payment method and shipping address saved to their Amazon account.

Information says he’s seen screenshots of the ads that show more information than usual, including the price of items, their estimated shipping times, and whether they qualify for Prime shipping. Keep in mind that users will first need to connect their social media accounts to their Amazon profiles before they can seamlessly shop on their apps. “In-app purchases with Amazon are available for select products advertised on TikTok and sold by Amazon or independent sellers on the Amazon store,” a company spokesperson confirmed to the publication.

Amazon’s new deals reportedly expand on its previous deals with Meta and Snap in an initiative that’s being internally called Project Handshake. Like those newer deals, the previous deals allowed Snapchat and Instagram users to buy items from within their apps. How Information notes, however, that it’s not entirely clear why TikTok made the deal when it was trying to develop its own shopping platform. TikTok brought live shopping to North America in 2022 and added more substantial features, like a dedicated shop tab and live-streaming shop buttons, last year. In addition to the fact that Amazon shopping could cut into sales on its own platform, TikTok could also face a ban in the U.S. unless ByteDance, its China-based parent company, agrees to sell it.
