In the US, Ørsted forms its first partnership in battery energy storage

In the US, Ørsted has entered into a joint venture with Mission Clean Energy, marking the first-ever stand-alone battery storage partnership.

Ørsted has entered into a strategic partnership with San Francisco-based Mission Clean Energy, a developer of utility-scale renewable energy and energy storage solutions, to deploy 1 gigawatt (GW) of standalone battery energy storage systems across the Midwest.

Ørsted will use its capital to secure and maintain a position in the interconnection queue for four Mission-owned storage projects, and Mission will continue to lead project development.

Max Bakker, CEO of Mission Clean Energy, explained: “Ørsted is the ideal partner to complement our growth capabilities with its strong balance sheet and sponsorship support.”

Mission and Ørsted have already submitted applications to connect the projects to MISO, the central U.S. grid operator. Ørsted will have the option to acquire an ownership stake in the projects as they are built.

This is Ørsted’s first standalone battery storage partnership in the US or globally, but it already has a large portfolio of existing solar and storage projects, including a 40 MW battery storage project at the Permian Solar Center in West Texas and a 300 MW/1,200 MWh battery storage project at the Eleven Mile Solar Center in Arizona (pictured). The storage project at the Eleven Mile Solar Center is one of the largest completed in a single phase in the US.

Ørsted has a portfolio of almost 6 GW of renewable energy projects in operation or under development in the US.
