Apple Journal App Could Soon Take Advantage of Apple Intelligence

Last year, Apple introduced its own Journal app as part of iOS 17.2. However, as I wrote here on 9to5MacThe app is pretty basic compared to other alternatives available on the App Store. But a new patent suggests Apple Intelligence could change everything about the Journal app in the future.

Apple Journal and Apple Intelligence App

Apple has filed a new patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) that reveals a number of improvements the company has been working on for its Journal app. Interestingly, the patent illustrations suggest that the app will get deep integration with Apple Intelligence to provide intelligent suggestions.

The Journal app already offers basic suggestions for Memories based on photos, music you listen to, places you’ve visited, and people you’ve messaged. But, as he noted Mac ObserverThe patent shows that Apple wants to take these suggestions to the next level by using artificial intelligence.

For example, the system would more proactively prompt the user to save a Memory to the Journal app after doing things like completing a workout or taking multiple photos in the same place. In another illustration, we can see that Apple also plans to integrate Journal with calendar events and reminders.

The patent also shows a new timeline interface where users can browse events from the same day as if they were in a chat, instead of cards with a cover and small text.

Apple Journal App Could Soon Take Advantage of Apple Intelligence

The Journal app does indeed see some interesting improvements in iOS 18. The company hasn’t announced anything about Apple Intelligence, however, likely because the AI features are only available in a limited preview for now.

While I would love to see Journal integrated with Apple Intelligence in some way in the future, I think the company should focus on bringing the app to iPad and Mac first.
