North India’s largest floating solar project launched at Omkareshwar in MP: Minister Rakesh Shukla

Bhopal: The largest floating solar project in central and northern India generating power of 90 MW has been launched at Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, a state minister said.

The Omkareshwar floating solar power project, costing Rs 646 crore, was launched on August 8, renewable energy minister Rakesh Shukla said in a statement.

He added that the project has been developed under the supervision of the Ministry of Renewable Energy and is the largest solar farm in India and also the largest floating solar project in central and northern India.

The Minister said that the project is being handled by SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL), a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN. He added that after the launch of the project, the total installed capacity of SJVN has increased to 2,466.50 MW.

He added that the project is likely to generate 196.5 million units of electricity in the first year and 4,629.3 million units over 25 years.

Once operational, the project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2.3 lakh tonnes and will significantly contribute to the central government’s mission of achieving net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2070, he added.

According to Shukla, the project will also help save water by reducing evaporation.

He added that the project will be implemented through a tender based on a construction, use and operation agreement for 25 years at a rate of Rs 3.26 per unit.

A floating power plant has been constructed on the waters of the Omkareshwar Dam.
