IED explosion causes FBI, MPD to reissue public warning | News, Sports, Jobs

WAILUKU – An explosion caused by an improvised explosive device on Old Haleakala Highway that was placed in a nearby trash bin struck a passing vehicle. The driver was taken for medical treatment but later released.

The FBI and Maui Police Department issued a press release Thursday before the explosion, warning the public about the threat of IEDs. The FBI and MPD identified and collected several IEDs of various sizes and shapes and reportedly made them safe. The FBI could not comment on exactly how many IEDs were found due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.

The recovered devices were located along roads between Kahului and Kula and were hidden from view in trash cans or other out of sight locations. The FBI and MPD continue to urge the public to be cautious of any unknown objects. The recovered device from yesterday’s press release is a 7 x 4 inch cylinder. Forensic examinations are ongoing to determine how these devices were configured to detonate.

The FBI and MPD continue to urge the public to report any suspicious activity that may pose a threat to public safety, such as an unattended item in a public space. If you see a suspicious or unfamiliar item, especially near a street or road, do not touch, drive over, or approach it for any reason. If possible, keep others away from the area and call 911 immediately.

If you have information or suspect you know someone who may be responsible for these devices, please report it immediately to tips.fbi.gov or 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324). Every detail — no matter how small — can be valuable in identifying those responsible and preventing future threats to the safety of our community.
