India’s largest floating solar project commissioned in Omkareshwar

The largest floating solar project in central and northern India, generating 90 MW of power, was successfully commissioned at Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, a state minister confirmed.

The Rs 646-crore Omkareshwar floating solar power project, launched on August 8, has been developed under the auspices of the Ministry of Renewable Energy, according to state renewable energy minister Rakesh Shukla, noting that it is the largest solar park in the country and the largest floating solar power project in the region.

The project, implemented by SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL), a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN, has increased SJVN’s total installed capacity to 2,466.50 MW. It is expected to generate 196.5 million units of electricity in the first year and 4,629.3 million units over 25 years. The project is also expected to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2.3 lakh tonnes, supporting the central government’s mission to achieve net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2070. It will also help in water conservation by reducing water evaporation, Shukla said. Developed through a tariff-based tender on a build, own and operate basis, the floating power plant will operate for 25 years at a cost of Rs 3.26 crore per unit and is located on the waters off the Omkareshwar dam.
