PM Modi on meeting landslide victims in Kerala’s Wayanad: ‘Disaster is not normal’ | Latest News India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted an aerial survey of the landslide-hit areas in Wayanad. He later met survivors at a relief camp.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the landslides in Wayanad were “not normal”.

“I have been collecting information about the landslide since I came to know about the incident. All the central government agencies that could help in the disaster were immediately mobilised,” the prime minister was quoted as saying by ANI at a meeting to review rescue and rehabilitation efforts for the landslide victims that killed over 200 people.

“This disaster is not normal. The dreams of thousands of families have been destroyed. I saw the situation on the ground. I met victims in relief camps who were faced with this disaster. I also met injured patients in the hospital,” he added.

During the review meeting, Modi assured all support to the state for rehabilitation. The Prime Minister said the Centre will make all efforts to fulfil all the demands of the state government.

Also present were Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Governor Arif Muhammed Khan, Chief Minister Suresh Gopi, Ministers of State A Rajan, AK Saseendran, PA Mohammed Riyas and Kerala Attorney General (Law and Order) MR Ajith Kumar.

The Prime Minister, along with Vijayan, also conducted an aerial survey of the landslide-hit areas. He later met the survivors at the relief camp.

In one of the worst disasters to hit Kerala in the early morning hours of July 30, 226 people lost their lives and over 130 are still missing.

Kerala wants to give Wayanad tragedy national disaster status

The Kerala government has asked the Centre to declare it a national disaster and a grave calamity. The central government has constituted an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) to visit the affected areas of the state and review the situation.

All those affected in Mundakkai and Chooralmala districts will get this assistance. An adult member of a family who has lost their source of income will get a daily allowance of Rs 300. This benefit will be available for a maximum of two persons per family.
