Indonesian company MIND ID commits to sustainable mining practices

Jakarta (ANTARA) –
According to Arief R. Wiwaha, head of ESG and reporting at the state-owned mining holding company, MIND ID is committed to ensuring environmental sustainability in mining operations.

“MIND ID is committed to environmental integrity and strong governance to continue to support Indonesia as it moves towards a sustainable future,” Wiwaha said in a statement on Saturday.

He added that with this commitment, the company proves that the development of the mining industry and environmental protection can go hand in hand for the benefit of current and future generations.

He added that MIND ID is implementing this commitment through a number of initiatives related to water management and renewable energy.

Wiwaha stressed that all group members are pursuing sustainable exploration, implementing best practices in the mining sector and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

He cited as an example a water management initiative by state-owned gold and nickel mining company PT Aneka Tambang (Antam), which included the installation of a modern water treatment plant as part of efforts to improve the quality of wastewater processed into clean water.

“Antam also maximises the use of recycled water in manufacturing processes and other applications,” he added.

Meanwhile, state-owned coal mining company PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) is using a passive acid mine drainage method in Tanjung Enim, South Sumatra.

“PTBA also processes acidic mine water through a water sluice system, turning it into clean water for various purposes, such as office needs, cleaning coal handling facilities and watering mine roads,” Wiwaha said.

In addition, PT Freeport Indonesia is building a new desalination plant, which will be a source of water for the Manyar Steelworks.

PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (INALUM) optimises Sigura-gura hydropower plant to increase water efficiency.

“By implementing more efficient technology, the Sigura-gura Hydropower Plant has succeeded in minimizing unnecessary water losses and increasing the optimal use of water in the electricity generation process,” Wiwaha said.

PT Vale Indonesia has implemented a web-based SWAP (Steam, Water, Air and Energy) monitoring system application to control water consumption.

According to Wiwaha, MIND ID Group also promotes the use of renewable energy sources in the fight against climate change.

“It was noted that in 2023, as much as 41 percent of the internal energy consumption in the MIND ID Group came from renewable sources, regardless of whether they were solar panels (photovoltaics), biofuels or hydropower,” he added.
