Stop Extortion or Face the Consequences: Home Affairs Advisor

Strict action will be taken against anyone involved in extortion, said Brigadier General (retired) Sakhawat Hossain, advisor to the Ministry of Interior.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat today, he said he had already spoken to the army chief on the matter.

“The political party associated with Bangabandhu and the history of the independence struggle is now in disarray, it is on the run. The country is now in a critical situation and you are taking advantage of it,” he added.

“This has to stop. I have received reports of extortion in Karwan Bazar and attempts to take over the bank by shooting it. This cannot continue,” the home affairs adviser warned.

“I do what I say,” he said, recalling his time in the military.

Addressing the public, Sakhawat Hossain said, “Don’t give in to extortion. If someone asks for money, stop him.”

He also ordered police officers to join the operation no later than next Thursday.

“Those who do not join by Thursday will be dismissed from service,” he said.

Addressing the police, he said: “Everything that happened will be investigated. The judiciary will issue a ruling based on the investigation.

“No one needs to be afraid. No innocent person will be harmed in any way,” he added.

Addressing the public, he said: “Do not attack the police. I am sure you understand the necessity of the police.

“Whether it’s about the occurrence of robberies or the fear of them, please try to understand the need for the police,” he added.
