Just Askin’ | New Parking Meters on UI Campus? | News

What are the new orange ones

Block I signs on parking meters on the University of Illinois campus?

The first Block I signs began replacing physical parking meters this spring.

The University of Illinois at Illinois Parking Department said they are being rolled out in batches as they are manufactured and will eventually replace all parking meters on campus.

“The Block I signs, which clearly convey Pay by App information and are less susceptible to vandalism, have been successfully implemented,” the department said.

This does not mean there will be any changes to how you park on campus, as parking meters will no longer accept coins from 2022. Instead, all parking meters have been covered with stickers with information on how to use the app-based payment system.

The department said the change will make it clearer that coins will not be accepted and will make it harder to peel off the stickers and mislead others.

“Over time, the campus has become accustomed to the transition to Pay by App services. Many users find it easier to pay with a credit card than to return to their vehicle to pay for the parking meter with coins,” the department said.

About 400 signs have been installed so far, with another 200 set to be installed soon, meaning about 850 signs are needed by the department to complete its work on campus.
