Who is SEBI Chairman Madhabi Puri Buch? Check Education, Net Worth & Career

US short-seller Hindenburg Research has accused SEBI Chairwoman Madhabi Puri Buch and her husband of abuse of power. Citing Hindenburg whistleblower documents, the Buch couple have secret offshore investments linked to the Adani “money-siphoning scandal.”

In its latest report, Hindenburg Research claims that after taking over at SEBI, Madhabi Puri Buch introduced new laws that are expected to benefit certain companies, such as Blackstone Group, where Dhaval Buch, Madhabi’s husband, serves as an advisor.

Who is Madhabi Puri Buch?

Madhabi Puri Buch, born in 1966, is the current Chairwoman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the first woman to hold the position.

She is married to Dhawal Bucha. The couple has a son named Abhay.

Madhabi Puri Buch completed her schooling in two cities: Fort Convent School in Mumbai and Convent of Jesus and Mary in Delhi.

She completed her Bachelor’s in Mathematics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University and then her MBA from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad.

Madhabi Puri Book: Career

Madhabi Puri Buch started her career with ICICI Group, where she worked for 17 years. During this time, she served as an Executive Director at ICICI Bank for 12 years and was the Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Securities from February 2009 to May 2011. She has also worked with other ICICI divisions such as ICICI Web Trade Ltd and ICICI HFC Ltd.

In 2011, she moved to Singapore to head Greater Pacific Capital LLP. She later founded Agora Advisory Pvt Ltd and worked for three years at New Development Bank in Shanghai.

Additionally, Madhabi has held non-executive directorships in several major companies including Idea Cellular (2011-2017), Max Healthcare, Zensar Technologies, Innoven Capital and Gabelhorn Investments.

She was appointed as the Chairperson of SEBI on March 1, 2022. Her term of office was initially fixed for three years, extendable to five years or till she attains the age of 65. She was appointed by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet and the selection process was overseen by the Financial Sector Regulatory Appointments Committee (FSRASC).
