Ponnani Port: Rs 20 crore proposal for multi-purpose jetty project to boost cruise tourism – Infrastructure News

As part of its efforts to enhance regional connectivity and stimulate economic growth, the Kerala government has proposed developing the Ponnani port, a non-major port, under the Sagarmala scheme. The Kerala Maritime Board has submitted a proposal to construct a multi-purpose jetty at the port, seeking partial financial assistance of Rs 20 crore from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

Research on PPP model for cruise tourism and economic growth

The proposed development aims to leverage the strategic location of the Ponnani port to boost cruise tourism and economic activity. The Kerala government is exploring the potential of developing the port through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, inviting expressions of interest (EoI) from private service providers. This initiative aims to launch cruise shipping services that would connect Ponnani with various sub-major ports and neighbouring states.

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed the details of the proposal in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. The development of the Ponnani port is in line with the broader objectives of improving regional infrastructure and promoting economic growth through increased maritime connectivity.

The project is expected to play a significant role in the development of Kerala’s port infrastructure, potentially boosting tourism and regional trade, while contributing to the broader objectives of the Sagarmala Programme.
