Harris Gets Campaign Backing From Law Firm Favored By Wall Street, Big Tech

Vice President Kamala Harris has reportedly received support in her bid for the White House from a top law firm that is a favorite of Wall Street and big tech companies.

Counsel and employees of the Paul Weiss firm, which has ties to Google, Apple, Citigroup and other major companies, have donated at least $1.4 million to Democrats in the 2024 election cycle. Reuters Agency reported Monday. That’s more than any other law firm in the United States, according to OpenSecrets, a nonpartisan campaign finance watchdog group.

Meanwhile, Paul Karp, the president of the law firm, has launched a massive fundraising effort for Harris, contacting hundreds of lawyers via email to drum up support for Harris, Reuters Agency reported. And Karen Dunn, co-chair of the litigation group and a former Obama White House lawyer, is reportedly part of Harris’ debate preparation team. Dunn is the lead lawyer for Google parent company Alphabet ahead of an antitrust trial set to begin in September.

“There is a definite concern that the revolving door between the Democratic Party and the Big Bar is serving the interests not only of politicians but also of the clients of the revolving door officials,” said Jeff Hauser, who leads a group called the Revolving Door Project, which “examines executive appointees to ensure that they are using their positions to serve the broad public interest and not to advance corporate power or personal advancement.”

The fact that Paul Weiss is endorsing Harris underscores the amount of support Harris is receiving from Silicon Valley and Wall Street insiders in 2024. In July, more than 100 venture capitalists pledged their support for Harris in a letter New York Times reported. New York Post reported in July that top Wall Street players, including Karp and about 40 others, had organized an “all-hands” Zoom video chat to discuss support for Harris.

Harris leads former President Donald Trump by half a percentage point, data shows RealClearPolitics average of polls.

Karp, a fundraiser for then-candidate Joe Biden in the 2020 election, has long been in touch with Harris, Reuters Agency reported. In 2014, when Harris was California attorney general, Karp and Paul Weiss represented Citigroup when the company faced investigations related to mortgage-backed securities, the agency said.

“I came away from that experience so impressed by her intellect, tenacity and creativity. I have supported her political efforts ever since,” Karp said.

Other partners at his firm are endorsing Harris for president, including former U.S. attorneys Loretta Lynch and Melina Haag, and former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson.

“Donors are certainly looking for relationships they can turn to,” said Jo-Ellen Pozner, a professor of ethics at Santa Clara University’s business school.
