BMW app aims to encourage drivers to consider electric vehicles – AirQualityNews

A new feature in the My BMW app will inform drivers of BMW cars with combustion engines how easy it would be to drive in an electric car.

BMW says the app’s new Electric Vehicle Analysis feature offers “a decision-making tool for switching from combustion engine to electric power.”

The new feature allows customers who drive a combustion engine model to see how well the electric model meets their driving needs.

To start, the driver must select one of the company’s electric vehicle models in the app to compare it with their current vehicle.

After the combustion engine car has completed a number of journeys (over 2,000 km), the app will tell the driver how many of those journeys they could complete on a single charge of the selected electric vehicle.

It’s clear that this feature is designed to combat the idea of range anxiety and other concerns drivers may have about the practicality of switching to an all-electric car. To simulate this, the app uses real-world driving data for the combustion-engined model in question, generated by BMW’s My Trips feature.

BMW plans to improve this feature in the future to expand the scope of the analysis, adding assessments of times when vehicles are not in use and long-distance trips, as well as information on charging facilities and the time it takes to charge.

The app is currently used by over 13 million drivers worldwide.

Dirk Wiedmann, Senior Vice President, Strategy & Sales Management, Digitalization, said: “Electric vehicles can already fit perfectly into the daily routine of many customers – it’s just that most of them haven’t tried it yet.

“Our Electric Vehicle Analysis app helps our customers make informed decisions about their powertrain choices.”
