Topsoe selected as technology supplier for HOLBORN renewable fuel refinery in Hamburg

08/14/2024 14:00:00

  • The HOLBORN Renewable Fuels Complex, located in Hamburg, Germany, is scheduled to be operational in early 2027 and will produce 220,000 tonnes per year of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
  • Topsoe will supply HydroFlex™ technology that enables the production of SAF and renewable diesel from waste and residues.
  • The license agreement confirms that Topsoe’s renewable fuel technology continues to strengthen its position in the global market.

Topsoe has signed an agreement with HOLBORN Europa Raffinerie GmbH (HOLBORN) to supply HydroFlex™ technology for the production of SAF and renewable diesel at its plant in Hamburg. HOLBORN is a successful oil refinery that supplies Hamburg and northern Germany with fuels and heating oil.

Production will serve to meet rapidly growing demand for SAF. According to the International Energy Agency’s Net Zero Scenario, more than 10% of aviation fuel consumption must be SAF by 2030 to stay on track for net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. In 2022, the International Air Transport Association estimated that global SAF production would only account for about 0.1% to 0.15% of total jet fuel demand.

Elena Scaltritti, Commercial Director of Topsoe, said: “We are pleased to sign this agreement with HOLBORN. To support the energy transition, we need a cleaner long-haul transport sector. A key step in securing this is to increase SAF and renewable diesel production. HOLBORN is leading the implementation of SAF in Northern Europe through its facility in Hamburg and we are proud to be part of this process. We look forward to delivering our technology and continuing to work with HOLBORN to accelerate the implementation of SAF in Europe and globally.”

Lars Bergmann, CEO of HOLBORN, said: “Our complex in Hamburg is at the forefront of our commitment to the energy transition. As such, it is essential that we bring in the best technology to meet the high standards and specifications required for the project. HOLBORN is very pleased to have signed this agreement with Topsoe, who are proven market leaders and whose technology is essential to processing our specific raw material requirements.”

HOLBORN is developing a renewable fuel complex for hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at its existing refinery in Hamburg, Germany. The plant is expected to be operational in early 2027, including connecting infrastructure to existing facilities. Once completed, the plant will produce around 220,000 tonnes per year of renewable diesel and SAF using waste and residues.

The agreement with HOLBORN follows a series of wins announced by Topsoe for the implementation of its HydroFlex™ technology, including Braya Renewable Fuels’ Come By Chance plant in Canada, Cepsa Bioenergia San Roque’s Palos de la Frontera plant in Spain and Guangxi Hongkun Biomass plant in China.
