Foxconn Chairman Calls on PM Modi to Discuss New Investments in New States

After investments in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Taiwanese iPhone contract manufacturer Foxconn on Wednesday flagged fresh investments in the two states, as well as Bihar and Andhra Pradesh. Foxconn has also tied up with Google to produce Pixel smartphones at its plant in Tamil Nadu.

Foxconn CEO Young Liu met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday and discussed the company’s investment plans in India.

“It was great to meet Mr. Young Liu, Chairman of Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn). I highlighted the great opportunities that India offers in future sectors. We also had excellent discussions on their investment plans in India in states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh,” Modi said in a post on social media platform X.

Liu also met Bihar’s deputy chief minister, industries minister and industries secretary on investment opportunities in Bihar. A Foxconn team also visited Bihar last year, but it has not been announced yet. He also led a Foxconn delegation to discuss the company’s plan to develop the electronics ecosystem, including semiconductors, in India, the Ministry of Electronics and IT said.

TN Plans

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu authorities said they have provided Foxconn with government industrial buildings and state Chief Minister MK Stalin will inaugurate the facility near Chennai on August 17.

Liu also visited India in July last year to attend the Semicon India event, where he met the prime minister. He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour, on the eve of the 75th Republic Day this year.

Foxconn is estimated to employ over 40,000 people in India, and its total investment is $9-10 billion.

The company is in the process of expanding its iPhone manufacturing facility, setting up a chip factory in a joint venture with HCL Group, an electric vehicle plant and an Apple Airpods factory over the next few years.

Criticism of NCP

Meanwhile, the Sharadchandra Pawar-led NCP party in Maharashtra has accused the BJP-led NDA of deliberately ignoring the state during discussions on Foxconn’s investment plans in India.

“Once again, Maharashtra is not part of the excellent discussions about Foxconn’s investment plans in India. Does this also mean that Maharashtra is not part of the great opportunities that India offers in the future sectors?” Clyde Crasto, National Spokesperson, NCP (SP), posted on X.
