Brooklyn Nets face rotation problem ahead of 2024-25 season

The NBA has 240 available minutes to allocate across its roster in a regulation game. The Brooklyn Nets still have Cam Johnson, Dorian Finney-Smith, Dennis Schroder and Bojan Bogdanovic, who have all proven they can handle the workload during their careers.

Assuming those five veterans play a combined 90 minutes per game, that leaves just 150 minutes to be split between the younger prospects. Cam Thomas is widely expected to be the focal point of Brooklyn’s offense next season. Recently signed Killian Hayes will need significant minutes to wash away the decline of his time with the Detroit Pistons. Emerging sophomores Jalen Wilson and Noah Clowney are expected to be members of the Nets’ future core.

That doesn’t even include $100 million-plus Nic Claxton, the recently acquired Ziaire Williams or the returning Keon Johnson.

The Nets have a minutes problem. And that’s fine, but it needs to be addressed. It’s time for General Manager Sean Marks to get to work.

While rumors suggest Brooklyn’s plan is to keep Johnson and Finney-Smith until next February, it might be prudent to move at least one of them now. Schroder, after showing Olympic heroics in Paris, should be a sure bet for the top spot. Bogdanovic was traded to New York last season for a solid return and should still have some value. He seems like another candidate to be traded before training camp.

Head coach Jordi Fernandez will have a tough task finding a suitable rotation if no changes are made before the start of the season, but considering he was voted the league’s top assist provider last season, there’s no evidence to suggest the 41-year-old will have any trouble implementing his plans.
