Fort Collins timber supplier has new owner after 40 years

After more than 40 years, Sears Trostel Lumber & Millwork has changed ownership.

The Fort Collins lumber supplier and millwork manufacturer was sold July 1 to Fort Collins entrepreneur David Seidl. According to a news release, Curt Viehmeyer and Steve Schwartz had owned the company since 1981, when they bought it from the family of longtime owner Bob Sears.

Before selling Sears to Trostel, Seidl said he founded Aspen Acquisitions, a private equity firm in northern Colorado.

The lumber company’s origins date back to 1929, when Carl Trostel opened his flagship store at 351 Linden St. According to the Sears website, Trostel, a Bob Sears, took over the business in 1948.

The company expanded its operations to include a lumber distribution and mold manufacturing facility on Airpark Drive in 1994. About 10 years later, it moved its retail store from Old Town to its current location at 1500 Riverside Ave., according to its website. Its retail location will remain on Riverside Avenue.

Schwartz will work for the company until 2024, Seidl said, while Viehmeyer will stay on for a year before retiring.
