US Justice Department may order Google to break up internet search monopoly

American media report that the Department of Justice is considering proposals to solve the Google monopoly problem.

In 2020, the department filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google, alleging that the IT giant violated antitrust law by illegally maintaining a monopoly in the online search and advertising sectors.

Last week, a US federal court ruled in favour of the Justice Department, finding that Google is a monopoly.

American media, including The New York Times, citing their informed sources, report that the department has begun discussions on how to eliminate the violations committed by Google.

Various proposals are reportedly being considered that would involve separating parts of Google’s software, such as the Chrome browser and the Android smartphone operating system.

Other actions include forcing Google to share search data with rival companies.

Google issued a statement and announced its intention to appeal the court’s ruling.

The Justice Department has also brought antitrust cases against Amazon, Apple and Meta.

Attention now turns to how the lawsuit will impact the business models of global IT giants.
