Marquette officials remind public of political sign regulations

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – Marquette city officials are reminding residents about the rules regarding yard signs.

City officials say that during election season, city officials cannot regulate signs based on their content — meaning all political signs are treated like garden signs and held to the same standards.

Marquette Community Development Director Dennis Stachewicz says the signs can be placed on private property in all city zoning districts.

“You can have up to four signs or 24 square feet, there is no time limit on how long you can display your sign, you can keep it up all year long,” Stachewicz said. “But one of the important things to remember is to not put them in the city right-of-way.”

Stachewicz says the regulation regarding signs falls within the framework of the city’s spatial development code.
