Challenge

Henry Ford Health, a leading healthcare provider in Michigan, is looking to develop one of the nation’s first net-zero hospital campuses. The challenge will be to operate without generating greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining reliable patient care. They will need innovative technologies and strategies to address energy use and waste management.

Solution

Henry Ford Health, Kiewit and Veolia North America have partnered to implement a comprehensive solution that, in addition to a 33-year operations and maintenance contract, will include:

PURCHASE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY
Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) ensure the supply of electricity from renewable sources, reducing dependence on traditional energy sources.

DIGITAL ENERGY MANAGEMENT
Veolia’s Hubgrade digital platform enables you to effectively monitor and manage your energy consumption, optimizing energy use and reducing waste.

SUSTAINABILITY TEAM
The task force leads the continuous improvement process and engages stakeholders in implementing sustainable practices.

ELECTRICITY
The project installed electric boilers, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

WASTE HEAT RECOVERY
Waste heat recovery technology generates 75% of the facility’s heat, maximizing energy efficiency.

Expected result

68% smaller carbon footprint

75% of the heat will come from waste heat recovery

The additional electric boilers will enable completely zero carbon dioxide emissions from day one, provided that renewable energy purchase agreements are in place.
