Microsoft revamps Clipchamp for iOS with AI and a new layout

Microsoft recently released a major update to the Clipchamp app for iOS.
The update includes a refreshed look that’s better suited to mobile devices, and several new features.

The Clipchamp video editor comes pre-installed on all Windows 11 computers, but it also has an iOS app. Having an iPhone is the only way to use Clipchamp on mobile, as there’s no version of Clipchamp for Android yet. Microsoft recently rolled out a major update to Clipchamp for iOS that includes a refreshed design, AI features, and a larger library of stock audio and video files.

Clipchamp for iOS is now at version 2.0.14. This jump in version number is significant, as it pushes the app beyond the 2.0 mark. Oddly enough, Microsoft created Clipchamp 2.0 before releasing Clipchamp 1.0 for Android. In fact, there is no version of Clipchamp for Android devices, not even in beta.

But for Clipchamp fans and iOS users, it’s time for an update to the app. A refreshed design makes it easier to edit videos on mobile devices. The update also adds new trend-based templates, more transitions, and more video effects. Smart reframe lets you crop landscape footage to portrait while tracking a subject, and the app now supports recording narration right in the app.

I’ll have to download the Clipchamp iPhone app to find out, but judging by the feature list and screenshots of the update, the app seems like a solid choice when it comes to creating videos for Instagram, TikTok, or other social media sites.

Where can I find Clipchamp for Android?

The FAQ section at the bottom of the Clipchamp mobile app page asks if Clipchamp is available for Android. The page states, “No, the Clipchamp mobile app currently only works on iOS. Stay tuned.” There’s just one problem, the page states that since at least March 2022, according to an archived version of the page saved by the Wayback Machine. That’s a long time to be up to date.

It’s not like Clipchamp for iOS was built for tablets, with Microsoft choosing to focus on the iPad instead of the mid-range of Android tablets that crowd the market. Clipchamp is very much optimized for iOS on mobile, especially now. Its interface has been redesigned to fit the portrait orientation of a phone, and I don’t see any reason why the layout can’t be reused on Android.

Sure, coding an app is different than designing one, but Microsoft has over 70 apps available for Android phones. I’m sure they could make Clipchamp for Android if that was a priority. As far as I know, there’s not even a public beta of Clipchamp for Android.
