This big trade didn’t work out well for the Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners acquired reliever Yimi Garcia in a trade at the deadline with the Toronto Blue Jays that was widely praised. Garcia was one of the best (if not the best) relievers available at the deadline, and the M’s struck early. He was supposed to help bolster the back end of the M’s bullpen, but so far it just hasn’t worked out.

Garcia has shown some great moments, throwing the ball at over 90 mph, but he is also incredibly consistent, and his performances since arriving in Seattle are just one of many reasons the M’s have fallen 5.0 games down the division table.

Last week against the Detroit Tigers, he was brought into a 2-0 game and immediately got two outs. He then walked a runner and gave up a two-run homer that tied the score in the eighth inning. The Mariners ultimately lost in 10 innings.

The next day, he walked the opener and had two outs before Andres Munoz came on and allowed a home run that cost the M’s the win in the eighth inning.

On Monday, Garcia replaced Bryan Woo and hit a home run to Max Muncy that turned a 1-0 deficit into a 3-0 deficit that decided the game.

Again, Garcia isn’t the sole reason for the M’s recent losses, but his performances certainly haven’t helped keep the ship on the right track.

According to @RaiseTheTrident on social media:

Yimi García’s last 7 games:

5.2 IP, 9.53 ERA, 5 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, 4 SO

Really tough for a transfer before the deadline, who I thought would really strengthen our defense 🙁

And according to @MarinerMuse:

Yimi García became a disastrous acquisition before the end of the transfer period.

The Mariners will be back in action on Tuesday night when they face the Dodgers again at 7:10 p.m. PT.

Garcia will be a free agent at the end of the season.
