Newspapers are still the most reliable source of news, but readers prefer to receive their news in digital form – AI-powered reporting

MUMBAI, India, Aug. 21, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Newspapers have been rated as the most trustworthy source of news, not just for older readers but also younger ones, according to a study conducted by Humanify, a technology-based research platform. Older respondents gave higher ratings to newspapers, citing concerns about fake news and conspiracy theories on the internet and social media channels, while up to half of younger readers (under the age of 30) also favored newspapers, even more than channels like television, social media and websites, as their news source.

While the results seem to underscore the continued trust in traditional media even in the digital age, the Humanify app survey also found a high preference for receiving news in digital format. Of all readers, 84.1% reported a good preference for the digital format, which is also reflected by older readers (>30 years).

The most important reason for choosing digital media was convenience, with 93.2% rating digital highly for convenience. The most important reasons were easy access to digital media, particularly for news consumption on the go and during commutes. Interestingly, there were also mentions that digital media would be more sustainable and kinder to the planet than printed newspapers, reflecting growing concerns about the planet and sustainable lifestyles.

“While there is an expectation of a preference for digital media, it is encouraging to see that traditional newspapers can still find relevance even for younger readers by adapting to digital formats,” says Geetika Kambli, founder of Humanify. “The study was conducted on the Humanify app, capturing conversations among readers about their preferred reading habits and using AI to transform this unstructured data into a research report in minutes. AI is changing the way we experience and express our feelings about products. If we choose to use it well, it can provide us with the much-needed clarity on how we read and decode insights,” says Geetika.

The report also noted that readers appreciate local news coverage, indicating a growing trend toward localization and personalization in news consumption.

Methodology

The study was conducted on a random sample of readers from Mumbai. The respondents were aged 18-50 and of mixed gender. All readers were interviewed to confirm their reading preferences and with their consent, their conversations about their reading experiences were captured and decoded using AI on the Humanify app.
