Kuo: Foldable MacBook with All-screen display delayed until late 2027 at the earliest

Apple’s rumored foldable MacBook won’t arrive until late 2027 or 2028 at the earliest due to technical issues, according to the latest prediction from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Previous reports by display industry analyst Ross Young, Haitong analyst Jeff Pu and Korean website Electricand Kuo himself suggested that Apple is working on a foldable laptop with a 20.2- or 18.8-inch screen.

When folded, the laptop would be a full-size on-screen keyboard that seamlessly integrates the typing experience with the display itself. When unfolded, the device would function like a standard monitor. When paired with an external keyboard, it would essentially transform into a large-screen desktop setup.

Kuo said in May that LG Display aims to begin mass production of display panels for the 20.2-inch or 18.8-inch foldable MacBook in the fourth quarter of 2025. However, his latest post on X (Twitter) claims that Apple has canceled the 20-inch device project and settled on an 18.8-inch display size.

“Some market participants previously expected Apple to release a foldable iPad in 2025,” Kuo said in his latest post. “However, the current supply chain study indicates that the foldable ‌iPad‌ has no visibility at all. This may also be because some people refer to this foldable MacBook as a foldable ‌iPad‌.”

Apple has been experimenting with various devices with foldable displays, including a foldable iPad and a MacBook. Of course, the MacBook is already foldable, but Apple is reportedly exploring a display-only MacBook form factor that lacks a standard keyboard.

Display analyst Ross Young said in July 2022 that Apple could launch some sort of foldable laptop in 2026 or 2027. It’s still unclear whether such a device would be classified as a Mac, an iPad, or something in between.

In a May report, Haitong analyst Jeff Pu said Apple’s first foldable devices would go into mass production in 2025 and 2026, following growing evidence of foldable devices in Apple’s supply chain. At the time, the analyst said Apple would likely release a foldable iPad or large-screen MacBook around that time, then launch a larger-volume foldable iPhone in late 2026.

Pu claimed that production of a single foldable Apple device with a 20.3-inch display would begin in late 2025, earlier than previously expected. However, Pu later said that he believes Apple will enter the foldable market in the second quarter of 2026 due to “display durability issues,” reflecting Apple’s intention to improve its foldable design. It seems that Apple is still in the prototyping stages of a foldable device. Would you be interested in such a product? Let us know in the comments.
