What AD Ross Bjork said about revenue sharing, maintaining Ohio State’s 36 sports

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The athletics committee for Ohio State University’s Board of Trustees met Wednesday, with new AD Ross Bjork delivering remarks regarding the ever-changing landscape of college sports.

Much of what Bjork discussed centered around the recent House settlement, which refers to an antitrust lawsuit filed against the NCAA.

Former Arizona State swimmer Grant House is the lead in the case, which challenges the NCAA’s name, image and likeness (NIL) rules and its cap on compensation for athletes. House wasn’t alone, as the settlement combined three antitrust cases brought by student athletes.

If approved, the settlement would allow schools to pay athletes.

Along with schools sharing up to 22% of revenue with athletes moving forward, a total of about $2.8 billion in back damages will be due to former athletes over a 10-year period. The majority of money will go to football and men’s basketball players.

The settlement would also eliminate scholarship limits and instead establish roster limits. Football, for example, will go from a scholarship restriction of 85 to a roster limit of 105.

Bjork said Ohio State will lose about 150 athletes, though his goal is to maintain all 36 sports.

Revenue sharing, Bjork said, should allow for conferences and the NCAA to regulate third-party NIL structures compared to the open market landscape currently in place.
