Justice Department Ready to Sue Real Estate Firm

Expanding its efforts to curb potential technology abuses, the Justice Department is suing real estate software company RealPage for allegedly allowing landlords to collude to raise rents, The New York Times reported, citing unnamed sources. Algorithms in RealPage’s software often suggest above-market rates to renters based on confidential information, according to previous lawsuits against the company. Several states, including California, are expected to join the lawsuit, which could happen as early as Friday. A RealPage spokeswoman said the company’s software is “intentionally built to be compliant with the law.”
