Openai, Anthropic Sign Sign Deals with US Government

Date

(MENAFN – Khaleej Times) Artificial intelligence startups OpenAI and Anthropic have signed deals with the United States government to research, test and evaluate their artificial intelligence models, the US Artificial Intelligence Security Institute said on Thursday.

The first-of-their-kind agreements come as companies grapple with regulatory scrutiny over the safe and ethical use of AI technologies.

California lawmakers are set to vote as early as this week on a bill that would broadly regulate how artificial intelligence is developed and implemented in the state.

Under the agreements, the US AI Safety Institute will have access to key new models from OpenAI and Anthropic before and after they are publicly released.

These agreements will also enable joint research to assess the capabilities of AI models and the risks associated with them.

“We believe the institute plays a critical role in defining U.S. leadership in responsible AI development, and we hope our collaboration will provide a framework that the rest of the world can build on,” said Jason Kwon, chief strategy officer at OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.

Anthropic, which is backed by Amazon and Alphabet, did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

“These agreements are just the beginning, but they represent an important milestone in our efforts to responsibly manage the future of AI,” said Elizabeth Kelly, director of the US AI Safety Institute.

The institute, part of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will also work with the U.K.’s AI Security Institute to provide feedback to companies on potential security improvements.

The AI Safety Institute was established last year by executive order from President Joe Biden’s administration to assess known and emerging risks associated with AI models.
