Brief description of the dive:

  • Amazon has launched same-day grocery delivery service from four stores owned by Seattle-based supermarket chain Metropolitan Market, the online retailer said in an email Tuesday.
  • The e-commerce giant is also expanding its delivery partnership with East Coast grocery store operator Weis Markets.
  • Amazon is expanding its role as a third-party grocery delivery service while also aiming to strengthen the Amazon Fresh network.

Diving Insight:

Amazon’s partnership with Metropolitan Market continues the company’s efforts to position itself as a delivery partner for established grocery chains across the U.S.

Under the agreement, Amazon will deliver groceries in just two hours from Metropolitan Market locations in Seattle’s Queen Anne and Crown Hill neighborhoods, as well as Sammamish and Tacoma, Washington. Customers who are members of Amazon’s Prime membership program will receive free delivery on their first three orders of $10 or more from the retailer, which operates 10 stores.

“This partnership with Amazon is consistent with our ongoing commitment to serving our guests where they are and delivering the highest quality food and ingredients they have come to know and love in our stores,” Ron Megahan, CEO of Metropolitan Market, said in a statement.

Amazon also said Tuesday that it is now delivering from six additional Weis Market locations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, building on an existing relationship between the companies. Last November, Weis began allowing shoppers to earn points through its loyalty program for orders placed through the Amazon platform.

The company expects to offer delivery services from additional Metropolitan Market and Weis Markets locations at a later date, Christian Seitel, Amazon’s head of U.S. grocery partnerships, said in the announcement.

In addition to Metropolitan Market and Weis Markets, Amazon offers e-commerce services to grocery stores, including Arizona-based Cardenas Markets and the California chain Bristol Farms, which, like Metropolitan Market, is a unit of Good Food Holdings. Amazon also has partnerships with Save Mart in California’s Central Valley and the Lucky Supermarkets chain in the San Francisco Bay Area, both owned by The Save Mart Companies.

In late August. Amazon added several locations to its fleet of Amazon Fresh supermarkets. The company operates about 50 stores under the banner, which debuted in September 2020.
