Fast Times at NIC – McKnight’s Senior Living

In just a few short weeks, the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care Fall Conference will descend on the nation’s capital, and excitement is already building.

In fact, there is a good chance that we will see record attendance this year. You can be sure that many of the financial brothers attending will be eager to help facilitate mergers, acquisitions and other portfolio expansions.

There’s even talk of possible blockbuster deals at the industry’s biggest event. Which, all things considered, seems a bit odd.

While there are signs of improvement in the senior services market, the sector is by no means safe.

Many operators continue to grapple with the lingering effects of COVID-19. And the challenges aren’t limited to filling units. They extend to finding and retaining workers in a labor market that’s more competitive than ever, navigating an increasingly complex regulatory landscape, and adapting to the changing expectations of residents and their families.

Compounding the complexity is the fact that competition is arguably fiercer than ever. New entrants are redefining both the definition and reality of senior living. This influx of fresh ideas and capital is forcing established operators to rethink their offerings and find new ways to remain relevant and profitable.

The prospect of quick profits from M&A can cause some to overlook the underlying issues that still plague the sector.

As we prepare for the warm handshakes and friendly banter that will soon be heard at the Marriott Marquis, let’s not lose perspective. The senior living sector may be on the cusp of significant change, but these changes must be managed with caution, forethought, and a firm grip on reality.

Otherwise, some of those amazing opportunities you achieve at the end of this month might not seem so great when you look back.
