New app to help residents navigate Manchester’s streets safely

A city is implementing a free app that aims to ensure safety while walking and using public transport.

The WalkSafe app is now available in Manchester, helping users choose safe routes, sharing their location and notifying friends and family if they don’t reach their destination.

The app, which also includes a map of safe places around the city, has been backed by Manchester City Council.

Emma Kay, co-founder of WalkSafe, said it was an “essential ally that allows us all to enjoy life and walk where we want, when we want”.

Ms Kay said the WalkSafe was “perfect for students, commuters, runners and pretty much anyone”.

Manchester City Council deputy leader Joanna Midgley said that “in an ideal world, everyone should be able to go where they want, when they want”.

“But until then, it is important that we implement measures that will protect and empower our residents,” she added.

Ms Midgely said local authorities were already working to keep the city safe by working with nightlife venues and training staff.
