Elegant, economical planes covered with synthetic shark skin

Achieving net zero emissions is a huge challenge for every industry, but some have it harder than others. This week Zero, Bloomberg Green Senior Reporter Akshat Rathi spoke to two Australian startups that are tackling emissions in sectors with particularly difficult-to-manage carbon footprints: aviation and mining.

Inspired by shark skin, MicroTau founder Henry Bilinsky helped create a plastic film that reduces drag on airplanes, and therefore fuel consumption. His company is working with Australian airline Jetstar. At Novalith, CEO Steven Vassiloudis leads a team that aims to clean up lithium production. Many hurdles remain, but both startups have a vision — and the backing of Australia’s Clean Energy Finance Corporation.
