Your Chromebook should now have one of the best Windows features

Chromebooks and the Google ChromeOS operating system they run on are getting a long-awaited PC-like feature: Snap Groups, which let you “snap” app windows to different sides of the screen.

The new feature is part of ChromeOS M128, the stable release of the operating system. It should be rolling out automatically to all Chromebooks soon, including yours, if it hasn’t already.

In ChromeOS, Snap Groups let you “snap” ChromeOS apps to different parts of your screen — but you can also save configurations, similar to the virtual workspaces Microsoft includes in Windows.

For me, Snap Groups aren’t enough to overcome the productivity benefits of connecting my Chromebook or PC to multiple displays. But I currently use the equivalent of a ChromeOS Snap Group on my Windows laptop: one app pinned to the left side of the screen, and reference documents in a separate window on the right. This eliminates the need to constantly switch between app windows.

ChromeOS M128 also gains a second feature that’s useful, if a bit clunky: optical character recognition (OCR) in the ChromeOS Camera app. As the name suggests, you can now use the camera to take a picture of a sign or document and have OCR “read” it and extract the text.

Of course, few Chromebooks have a rear camera, so to take full advantage of this feature you’ll either have to flip the camera around or fold the convertible into something more like a tablet.

The feature in ChromeOS M128 supports 77 languages ​​and supports horizontal and vertical detection, Google said. It is also disabled by default, but can be enabled via Settings > Text Detection.

Google has also made several improvements, such as simplifying permission controls for microphones and cameras and storing “meaningful” data (crash rates and other performance metrics) for one year.
