Spanish electronics manufacturing company (IPP) BNZ is partnering with GRS, a solar EPC contractor owned by Gransolar Group, to build a 49 MW solar power plant in northern Portugal.

The project, located near Vila Nova de Famalicão, will generate enough energy to power about 14,000 homes. Construction is already underway, with GRS building the plant with local company Triple Watt. BNZ has also signed a protocol with the local government to protect cork oaks and reforest the areas with native species.

“This is the result of the work we have been doing with Vila Nova de Famalicao in recent months to ensure that the promotion of a more sustainable future goes hand in hand with the development of local communities,” said BNZ CEO Luis Selva.

BNZ has a European solar portfolio of over 1.7 GW under development in southern Europe. This project is the company’s first in Portugal, but it plans to install around 600 MW in the country by 2026.

The project is GRS’s seventh installation in Portugal. The company, which specializes in solar power plants, said it has 2.9 GW of installed capacity in 118 operating plants worldwide.

According to data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), at the end of 2023, the total installed solar capacity in Portugal was 3,876 MW, while at the end of the previous year it was 2,646 MW.
