Russian leader Vladimir Putin said his favorite candidate in the U.S. election is incumbent President Joe Biden, but since he withdrew from the race and recommended Kamala Harris, Russia will also support her.

Quote: “As for the favorites, that’s not for us to decide. That’s the choice of the American people. Our favorite, so to speak, was Mr. Biden. He withdrew from the race, but he recommended supporting Ms. Harris. And that’s what we will do, we will support her.”

Details:Putin also said that Harris’ election rival, Donald Trump, while serving as US president, “has imposed more sanctions on Russia than any other president before.”

Quote: “Her (Harris – ed.) laughter is so contagious, which means she feels good. And if Ms. Harris feels good, she can refrain from such actions (imposing sanctions).”

Why is this important?:The United States has repeatedly pointed to Russian interference in the US elections.

After the 2016 US presidential election, Russia was accused of supporting Donald Trump.

In June 2024, Bloomberg wrote that Russia will continue to interfere in the U.S. election to weaken the U.S. and its support for Ukraine.

On September 4, U.S. authorities imposed sanctions on the management of RT, a Russian television channel linked to the Kremlin (including editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan), as well as the hacker group RaHDit for interfering in the 2024 presidential election.

Current US President Joe Biden actively supports Ukraine in countering Russian aggression.

Biden has repeatedly called Putin a “war criminal” and a “brutal tyrant” and publicly condemned Russia’s attacks on civilian areas in Ukraine.

At the same time, Putin’s aides, including Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council who defers to the Kremlin, have repeatedly threatened the West for supporting Ukraine. His messages have also resorted to low insults, often focusing on Biden’s age, which is 10 years older than Medvedev’s boss, Putin.

The former US president has repeatedly claimed that he has a “plan” to restore peace to Ukraine within 24 hours if he becomes president again. In November 2023, Volodymyr Zelensky invited Trump to visit Ukraine. However, Trump refused, citing a “conflict of interest” with the administration of current US President Joe Biden.

After his success in the Iowa Republican caucuses in mid-January, Trump reiterated that he would end the war “very quickly” if he won the election. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has re-invited Trump to Ukraine.

Putin’s administration says it has no idea how former US President Donald Trump can stop Russian aggression in Ukraine. There have also been no contacts between Russian diplomats and the US politician on the matter.
