City of Gadsden Engages High School Students in City Leadership

GADSDEN, Ala. (WBRC) – The City of Gadsden is launching a youth council program aimed at getting high school students involved in city government.

This program allows students to express their opinions on issues that are important to them.

The program is part of the Grow Gadsden plan. Brett Johnson of the city of Gadsden says the youth council will benefit everyone.

The Gadsden City Council recently approved a proposal to create a youth council that would advise city leaders on issues related to the concerns of young people in the city.

The youth council will meet monthly and its main goal will be to develop and implement a comprehensive action plan for young people in the city.

“When you get young people involved in local government and community development programs and just being able to bring their voices in. First of all, they learn more than most adults ever do about their local government and how things work, but they understand and they start to be innovative,” Johnson said.

Brett Johnson said the youth council will operate on a recurring basis each school year and is open to Etowah County students in 10th through 12th grade.
