Navisun, Ampion Partner to Bring Solar to Communities in Four States – pv magazine USA

Navisun plans to design, build, own and operate five community solar projects in Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Illinois, while Ampion will handle subscriber acquisition, billing, customer service and long-term subscription management.

Ampion, a community solar subscription company, and Navisun, an independent power producer, have signed a long-term strategic partnership to bring solar energy to commercial, industrial and residential customers in the Northeast and Midwest.

The plan is for Navisun to design, build, own and operate five community projects in Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Illinois, with Ampion handling subscriber acquisition, billing, customer service and long-term subscription management. Community solar typically involves a customer subscribing to a portion of the project’s off-site generating capacity, receiving utility bill credits for the electricity generated by the facility.

The projects are expected to produce more than 21 MW and serve homes and businesses, including economically disadvantaged customers. The first project, in Maine, is scheduled to begin operations in November.

Navisun, headquartered in Massachusetts, says it has 37 operating assets in six states generating more than 106 MW and 150 GWh annually. The company also has 28 MW of projects under construction and more than 300 MW of development plans. Last year, Navisun announced it had secured up to $235 million in debt financing through two separate institutions. The company planned to use the financing to scale its operations and deliver its projects.

“As the renewable energy industry continues to grow, it must also deliver clean energy in a long-term, responsible and sustainable manner,” said Jason Spreyer, CEO of Navisun. “By focusing on the long-term profitability of our assets, Navisun ensures that the projects we build today will continue to deliver sustainable energy for decades to come.”

Ampion recently made news for partnering with The Wendy’s Company to help the restaurant chain source renewable energy. Nearly 100 company-operated Wendy’s restaurants and nearly 40 franchised restaurants in New York, Illinois, and Massachusetts are now registered with Ampion+, a product that allows organizations to earn Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), a green energy sourcing strategy that electricity customers like Wendy’s use to justify their renewable energy claims.

Ampion shares solar performance data with customers, which Nate Owen, CEO and founder of the company, says “leads to customer satisfaction and improved site economics.”

“Together, we are taking a long-term, creative approach to distributed generation markets that extends beyond immediate subscriber acquisition. This evolving industry requires more sophisticated expansion strategies, and we are pleased to have a partner who shares our commitment to continuing this growth,” Owen said.
