2 youths charged after students bear spray southeast Edmonton high school – Edmonton

Edmonton police say two students have been charged after pepper spray was used on the south side of a high school Thursday morning.

The incident occurred at the Kate Chegwin School, a school for students in grades 7 through 9, located in the area of ​​31st Avenue and 48th Street.

An Edmonton police spokesman said Friday that a male student sprayed a group of students at the school and then fled to a nearby home. An Edmonton Public Schools spokesman said the incident occurred near a restroom during a meal break just before 10:30 a.m.

Police said another student broke into the home the first student had fled to and pepper-sprayed people inside. Both youths were arrested.

Staff and students who were directly affected by the bear spray were immediately moved outside. Several students received first aid from paramedics at the school, according to a public school spokesman.

At about 11:45 a.m., Edmonton Fire Rescue Services deemed the air safe for students and staff to return inside. The school extended the outdoor lunch hour an extra half hour “out of an abundance of caution,” according to the school board.

“We take these types of incidents seriously and the school will take action against those involved,” Edmonton Public Schools said in a statement.

“The school has been working closely with emergency services to ensure the safety of students and staff and that there is no further risk to students. A letter was sent to parents yesterday afternoon once all information had been confirmed and normal operations had resumed.”

Police said a boy who allegedly used pepper spray at school has been charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon and criminal damage.

The second boy has been charged with burglary, assault, possession of a weapon and criminal damage.

The age of the students is unknown.
