What the jockeys said: Moir Stakes 2024

Glory to Mornington took his first Group 1 victory, leading throughout and winning the $750,000 prize Moir Rates (1400m) in The Valley on Saturday.

It was Mornington Glory’s seventh win in 20 starts, taking his earnings to more than $980,000.

Mornington Glory is a six-year-old gelding sired by Shalaa (IRE), ridden by Ethan Brown and is trained by Gavin Bedgood.

Here’s what the riders thought of their mount’s performance in the Moir Stakes.

1st place – MORNINGTON GLORY (Ethan Brown) He’s been presented in great order here. He drew gate one and flew through the covers, he just had an easy task. He was fit and sound. I was the beneficiary of a well-prepared horse for a great group of owners. I’m very pleased, it’ll take some time to sink in but as I said there’s a great group of owners in this horse, it’s great to get a Group 1 win for Gav (Bedggood). It’s his first win and the crowning glory of a tough day. I’m so delighted.

2. – HAYASUGI (Jamie Kah) I couldn’t be happier with her. This time he really did a great job, she’ll be a big three year old and she was strong all the way through the line, I couldn’t pull her up (later) so she looks good for the rest.

3. – LADY OF CAMELOT (Zac Lloyd (AND)) She was fantastic. She’s probably looking for something more now that she’s a bit older, she’s a bit off balance, but her last furlong was still very good. A wonderful mare and it was an honour to ride her today.

4 – ESTRIELLA (Blake Shinn) She ran fairly. I thought it was a little below her best. She rode well throughout. I thought we had a reasonable run. She came up on the bend to challenge but the winner pulled out all the stops so he deserves credit. She ran well but I know she’s better.

5. – I WOULD LIKE TO WIN (Lukasz Nolen) Great. The 1000m around The Valley probably wasn’t to his taste, but he ran home well. Let’s have the 1200m here in three weeks. He’s in great shape, exactly where we want him to be.

6 – COLEMAN (Kerrin McEvoy) He ran great. He came out of the stable better today, travelled and will improve to 1200 in Manikato, so a good, positive run.

7 – JOHNNY ROCKER (Mark Zahra) I thought he did well. He did quite well for that level of horse, the fence wasn’t perfect and he just collapsed at the end.

8 – LIGHTNING CHAIN (Damian Lane) She ran much better than she did at the finish line. She was simply out of her comfort zone for most of the race, and of course the surface wasn’t to her liking, so once she got her balance and got to the finish line, she ran it OK.

9 – CABALLUS (Joshua Parr) The first half of the race didn’t go well for us. It was always risky, I think, from the start, but he finished well.
