How to Check (and Cancel) Your Subscriptions on Your Android Phone

You’ve become so dependent on mobile technology that it’s nearly impossible to get through the day without using at least one app on your phone or tablet. You need messaging apps to stay in touch with family and friends when you’re on a business trip. You reach for a recipe app to quickly whip up a meal for breakfast. And of course, you end the day by using a streaming app for your daily dose of entertainment.

With so many apps and services out there, it can be hard to keep track of the subscriptions you’ve signed up for. This can easily lead to chaos, especially if you’re on Android, where subscriptions automatically renew. Before you know it, you’ll be billed for apps and services you no longer use. To avoid unwanted charges on your account, it’s always a good idea to regularly check your active Android subscriptions and cancel any that aren’t worth your money anymore. We’ll walk you through three easy ways to do just that.

Method 1: Using the Play Store

You can view and cancel your subscriptions directly from the Google Play Store on your Android device. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Launch the Google Play Store app on your phone. If the app is not working, try these Play Store fixes for your Android.
  2. Click on your profile icon in the upper right corner.
  3. Check that the account you signed into the app with is the same one you used to subscribe to the app or service. If not, tap the down arrow next to the name and select or add the correct Google account.
  4. Select “Payments and Subscriptions” from the menu.
  5. Open “Subscriptions.”

Next, you will see all the subscriptions you have on your Google account. The Active section shows the subscriptions you are currently paying for. You may also see the Expired section, which shows the subscriptions you have previously canceled, but you can choose to re-subscribe. To cancel an active subscription, follow these steps:

  1. Select the subscription you want to cancel to open the details page.
  2. Click “Unsubscribe” at the bottom.
  3. If the app allows you to pause your subscription, select “No Thanks” to proceed with cancellation.
  4. Select your cancellation reason.
  5. Click “Continue.”
  6. In the dialog box, click “Cancel Subscription” to confirm.

You will then be canceled from the service. However, you can continue to use the app or service until the end of the billing period. If you change your mind, you can simply click “Resubscribe” on the Play Store subscription details page, if the app/service allows it.

Method 2: From Settings

All your subscriptions can also be viewed in your Google account in the Settings app. Here’s how to get to this section:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down to Google.
  3. Make sure you’re on the correct Google account used for your subscriptions. If not, tap the arrow next to your name at the top and switch to another account.
  4. Select “Manage your Google Account.”
  5. Go to the “Payments and Subscriptions” tab.
  6. In the Subscriptions box, tap “Manage Subscriptions.”

Here, you’ll see both your active and inactive subscriptions, along with details like the plan you signed up for and when your subscription renews or ends. The inactive subscriptions listed here are view-only, meaning you can’t open or re-subscribe to them from the Settings app. But for active subscriptions, you can tap them to see more details, and if you want, you can cancel your subscription right from there:

  1. On the Subscriptions page in the Settings app, select the Android apps or services you want to unsubscribe from.
  2. Click “Cancel Subscription.”
  3. Select the reason you want to cancel.
  4. Press “Continue.”
  5. To continue, click the “Cancel Subscription” button.

If you do not cancel your subscription on the exact day your subscription ends, you will still be able to enjoy the benefits of your plan until its expiration date.

Method 3: Through the browser

Google offers a nifty AI-powered support assistant on its online help pages that can guide you through the unsubscribe process. That way, you won’t have to go through the hassle of navigating through the Play Store or Settings app to get to the subscription page. Here’s how to access the chatbot from your Android browser:

  1. Open your favorite browser on your device.
  2. To cancel your subscription, visit the Google Play support page.
  3. If you haven’t signed in yet, sign in to the Google account associated with your subscriptions. Click “Sign in” in the upper right corner and enter your account details.
  4. Return to the Help page, press the blue “Unsubscribe” button. This will open the Help guide chat box on the right.
  5. Confirm that you are using the correct Google account by tapping “Yes.” The Help guide will then answer all the subscriptions you currently have. However, if the subscription you are looking for is not listed, it is probably only visible in the Play Store. Continue the chat until the Help guide provides you with a link to your Play Store subscriptions.
  6. Select the subscription you want to cancel.
  7. Confirm your cancellation by clicking “Yes”.
  8. (Optional) End the support chat by selecting your unsubscribe reason, clicking “Done,” and then closing the chat window.

Once you have unsubscribed, an email should have been sent to your inbox with unsubscribe details.
